Polar Bear Club 2004

The annual ritual: a bunch of crazy folks get together at 9:00 in the morning on New Year's Day and jump into the Monongahela River. Why do we do this? I have no idea. Maybe it provides clarity and puts the year in perspective... or maybe it's just fun to do something idiotic on the first day of the year. Either way, I'm hooked. Despite press reports that it was a 'balmy' day, I measured the temperature at 27 degrees shortly before I left for the wharf. It was, however, a beautifully sunny, clear morning and a perfect day for jumping in the river. A great crowd of friendly people turned out, and over 100 reportedly took the plunge. There was plenty of press coverage, and even a trumpeter who played "Auld Lang Syne" for us. What a great way to start the year. |
